Santa Maria degli Armeni, Calabria
Santa Maria degli Armeni is a small church located in the Rudina forest near Ferruzzano, in the province of Reggio Calabria, at an elevation of approximately 400 metres. It stands in an area long associated with Armenian presence in Calabria – a community with a particularly strong presence between the 6th and 9th centuries. The church is within sight of the Rocca degli Armeni and surrounded by place names that echo this ancient heritage.
The church is architecturally distinctive: it presents itself as a small temple in the Syro-Armenian style, with a pagoda-like roof form unlike typical Byzantine or medieval churches of the region. It is considered one of the most tangible expressions of Armenian architectural influence in Calabria.
The surrounding area contains further evidence of Armenian settlement. A researcher named Orlando Sculli catalogued 152 palm-press stones (palmenti) in the agricultural lands around Ferruzzano, believed to have been used during the Byzantine-Armenian period – and possibly earlier. One of these stones in the contrada of San Pietro bears an Armenian trilobate cross resting on an equilateral triangle – a recurring symbol of Armenian spirituality, where trilobate crosses with spheres or triangles at their extremities carried deep religious meaning.
The broader zone around Ferruzzano and Bruzzano is increasingly recognised by researchers as the heart of an Armenian cultural landscape in southern Calabria – a territory shaped by centuries of Armenian presence, still legible today in its architecture, stone carvings, place names, and even food traditions.
